On October 8, the “Rapid Detective” grid protection device, developed under the leadership of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd., made its first practical application after upgrade at the Hangzhou 220-kilovolt flexible low-frequency transmission project. This device is the nation’s first single-end quantity line protection apparatus based on power electronics control characteristics, capable of completing fault discrimination within 5 milliseconds, providing a new technical approach for rapid fault identification and isolation in power grids.
The Hangzhou 220-kilovolt flexible low-frequency transmission project, which the device serves, is China’s first demonstration project of its kind. The project is equipped with a large number of power electronics devices, whose principles and control protection logic differ significantly from traditional power grids, altering grid fault characteristics. While traditional line faults produce obvious current fluctuations that can serve as discrimination bases for protection devices, fault currents in this type of new power grid are smaller and waveforms more complex, making traditional protection methods unable to accurately identify faults.
The single-end quantity protection principle applied by the “Rapid Detective” completes fault judgment using information collected from only one end of the line, reducing the impact of communication links while simplifying system configuration and effectively strengthening new power grid protection capabilities. Since being put into grid application earlier this year, the device has undergone practical operation tests during summer peak load and multiple typhoons, effectively resisting impacts from sudden events such as lightning strikes and load mutations.
State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power stated it will continue to promote innovation in grid protection technology to provide technical assurance for the safe and stable operation of new power systems.
